The old R.E.M.E Depot, Station Road, Grantown-on-Spey

What stories these old buildings could tell.  I remember when my grandad worked there.  My gran and I would walk up to meet him I was  only about 4 or 5 and I remember the huge high fence and my face pressed up against it waiting there was a square pond inside the gates with purple flowers all around it.  My mother still has the same flowers in her garden.

These pictures were taken before they were sold, they are no longer there they were knocked down.  Some sheds still remain as in what they call Industrial site.

Memories

I will start this with my memories.  I was a fifties child went to Grantown Grammar school when it was primary and secondary all in one, we had secondary pupils from Cromdale, Nethy, Dulnain, Carrbridge, Boat-of-Garten, Dava  etc  as there were still primary schools at Dava, Cromdale, Dulnain etc.   We all had to wear the school uniform, I had a gym slip (with a secret pocket) , I remember the girls toilets were down at the bottom where they park their cars now.  There were seperate toilets for primary 1 & 2.  I recall having to go to BIG toilets when in primary 3 and I was terrified at the thought, this was such a big scary thing with all the big ones, how silly it all seems now.  I loved the holidays when we all marched to the South Church the whole school everyone was so excited as we all knew it was holday time.

Remember!

A wee reminder to jog your memory.
Can you remember?
  • the street and shops.  How many hairdressers, barbers, butchers, bakers, chemists, shoe shops, grocers.  The top tallies and the bottom tallies etc and where were they all?
  • Waterford Hotel were you married there? did you meet your sweetheart there? did you work there ?  Ian Johnstone on a Saturday night?  What other bands can you remember?
  • The Cellar, Dunvegan Hotel Folk Nights, Dances in the Drill Hall, Craiglynne Hall, The Institute?
  • where and what did you play did  at? volting across the burny, housies in the brooms, sledging on the tiddlywinks?  You tell me.
  • the skating pond with the big light in the middle, learn to swim or dive at the bathing pool after you bought all your ice cream and lemonade in Craigens, or ski on the golf course.
  • big bonfires all over the town at each end of Kylintra crescent. East End and Backstreet.
  • when the cattle show was in the black park and they had sideshows at the mossie.
  • What about the school Doctor Bain, Hunter the school master or Miss Legg, Miss Grant or Thorny?
  • Creeping past Hendry the dentist's in the High Street
  • The cinema which one? there was one burnt down and the railway station, or the Reme Depot.  What about the fiire station siren every Saturday at 12:45.
